CHEM is a series of five activities designed to provide experiences for students that help them to accomplish an understanding of the nature of chemicals and how they interact with the environment.    They discover that all foods are made up of  chemicals and then perform acid/base testing as one way of differentiating chemicals frequently used as food additives and in food preparation.  The investigate the physical properties of sugar and sugar substitutes.  And then discover the concept of a threshold of taste (the least amount required to detect a substance).  Finally, students observe the plant and animal roles in the carbon cycle as they burn a candle and use an indicator to determine that carbon dioxide is a product of burning.
